New Trier’s Newest Theatre: A Black Box

BlackBoxFloorPlan

WHAT IS A BLACK BOX THEATRE?

Black box theatres are just that: four black walls forming a box. They are critical to a complete education in the performing arts. Within a black box, student designers, performers and directors have limitless scenic and staging possibilities. New Trier’s black box will be an artistic laboratory, a place to conduct endless experiments in creative expression.

WHY ARE WE ASKING FOR YOUR DONATION?

New Trier High School is currently undergoing a major three-year renovation that includes framing out this exciting space. But the school needs the community’s financial support to “outfit” it with the components to function as a theatre – lighting, sound system, seating, curtains, AV equipment, catwalks, platforms, and acoustical walls and flooring.

Please help us “Raise The Stage” by making a contribution today! We are raising funds in the name of two New Trier graduates, recently deceased, who were passionate participants in New Trier’s stellar performing arts division: Mary Catherine Hayes (’10) and Sarah McCausland (’13). Your gift will make it possible for the Hayes-McCausland Theatre to operate as a versatile performance space and be ready for students by the start of the 2017-18 school year.

HOW MUCH ARE WE RAISING?

Our goal is $1 million raised over the 2015, 2016 and 2017 fiscal years. Here are the major components and their costs:

HOW WILL YOU BE HELPING TOMORROW’S STUDENTS?

A functioning black box theatre will:

  • Offer students a greater number and wider diversity of classes and programs;
  • Encourage more students to take speech and acting classes;
  • Expand the variety of performance options;
  • Give tech crews access to the most sophisticated lighting, sound and AV equipment available;
  • Widen the creative possibilities for the Spring Plays Festival;
  • Improve scheduling efficiency by eliminating the need to share space with productions in rehearsal;
  • Enhance the stature of one of the nation’s preeminent high schools for the performing arts.

2014-2015 New Trier Performing Arts Division by the Numbers

  • 574 student opportunities to participate in plays, musicals and performance groups
  • 250 students in theatre classes
  • Classes held 8 periods a day in the McGee Theatre, New Trier’s only theatre classroom.
  • 50 performing arts events.
